A new DX chassis option

If you’re looking for a really high quality foundation to build a modern image diesel on, we’ve long been spoilt with the SD7/9/24/26/35 chassis from Atlas being pretty readily available over the past 20 years to make our DA’s DBs, DCs and DBRs on.

The GM DFs and their derivatives have likewise been well catered for by the Kato SD40-2 in recent years.

But for a proper GE-bogied member of the DX family alas there’s been slim pickins except for the Bachman Dash 8s. Until now...

Yes, Atlas’ new Dash 8 range is finally dribbling out and, priced about the same as the updated Bachmanns, I think I know which one I'd pick. And wouldya look at that. It’s a pretty good fit. Adding a little ‘tail’ on the inboard end of the main bogie castings and a few optional brake cylinders should have this looking pretty decent. Then we just have to decide what to do with it.

What chance of getting the fuel tank down to the right size? Is there enough meat to cut into?
