On Tour VII; the end

One last instalment from the trip down south.

Moving back to Timaru. First up is a picture of where the old loco depot once was. Its now the ballast yard. the track running through leads to the old turntable which still appears to be functional.

Next up the new loco depot. Not much to look at but its all they have left.

I then had a wander round the back streets. most of the street trackage has been lifted, but you can still see where it once was.

However in some places it still survives, and in a potentially quite modelable form.

What was the building in 3rd pic down used for? Was it a wool store? Rough guess of age would be dating from 1940's? 1950's?

There used to be loads of wool, grain and seed stores out the back covering at least the two streets that ran paralel to the rail yard on the 'sea' side. On both sides of the streets there were twin tracks with lots of crossovers that served these stores and the tracks ended up on the wharves at the northeast corver of that area I never saw it operating, but it must have been an amazing place in the 50s-70s.

Just spent a couple of hours 'strolling' around the district with the aid of Google Earth....looks like many of the buildings dating from the era I'm interested in are long gone, but here and there you see a brick facade that gives a sense of what it used to look like. Anyone got pics of wagons being shunted outside these warehouses?
